Sometimes, you just need to go where you’re calm and comfortable

Rural Retreat

Barn doors and massive timber beams pay homage to this Erin, Ontario property’s past as a working farm, but the restrained decor and hardwood furniture – the antique teak bed especially – inserts a midcentury flair, making for a designer bedroom that’s equal parts classic and contemporary. Staying Put

A designer and builder/designer initially bought their home as an investment property, but after the reno, they ended up staying – who could blame them? The master bedroom, outfitted with a Herman Miller bed and custom bench built by the couple’s company, Ben Homes, gives them even more reason to stick around. Read about the home whose designers just couldn’t leave here.

narrow children's bedroom idea by Mary Ratcliffe

Double Decker

For this tall, narrow children’s bedroom, building out wasn’t an option for designer Mary Ratcliffe, so she built up instead. The black walnut platform doubles as both bed and storage, while the centrepiece – a hammock floor above – gently filters light from the skylight overhead. This calming design creates an out-of-the-way retreat, embodying one of the standout bedroom ideas in the GTA, where thoughtful design and clever space planning come together to transform even the smallest rooms into peaceful sanctuaries. Designed and built by its homeowner, the residence uses more than 30 slabs of Italian marble

Walk through the front door, and it’s the first thing you feel: thick slabs of Calacatta Vagli wrapping the kitchen walls and island; a block of travertine floating above a dark Pietra Grey hearth in the family room; and deep, aubergine-veined Calacatta Viola unfurling dramatically across the ensuite bathroom. Throughout this new build in Toronto’s Sherwood Park neighbourhood—appropriately dubbed Vaglihome—stone defines every moment.
